Understanding Vaccines

Veterinary vaccines are divided into two distinct categories to prevent over-vaccinating while ensuring your pet is protected against fatal diseases.

Core vs. Non-Core Vaccines

  • Core Vaccines: Recommended for all pets, regardless of lifestyle. For dogs, this includes Rabies and DAPP (Distemper, Adenovirus, Parvovirus, Parainfluenza). For cats, it's Rabies and FVRCP (Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus, Panleukopenia).
  • Non-Core (Lifestyle) Vaccines: Recommended based on risk of exposure. Dogs that board or go to groomers need Bordetella (Kennel Cough). Dogs exposed to woods or wildlife may need Lyme and Leptospirosis. Outdoor cats should receive the FeLV (Feline Leukemia) vaccine.

Medical Disclaimer: This timeline is a general guideline based on standard veterinary practices (AAHA/AAFP). Always consult your local veterinarian, as specific legal requirements for Rabies and regional disease risks vary.
